Taras Shevchenko Scientific Library is one of the oldest and largest libraries of Ukraine. The fundamental purpose of the library is to support of fast and quality service of readers. The Library is committed to providing a high-speed search, operating order and obtaining of required literature. Taras Shevchenko Scientific Library has a large information resource system. The level of activity of the library depends on rates of funds updating, quality bibliographic processing and actualization of the catalogues.

Computer based automation system is implemented (used) for a fast service.

Indexes, abstracts and other references are available on the on-line catalogue.

Access to catalogue is available at any workstation connected to the internet.  From the homepage it is possible to search and order required literature, automatically receive notification about execution of the order. All students (readers) are provided library service upon printing of the library readers electronic cards with bar-codes. Unique bar-code is used circulate books, to borrow reserves, request the books and allows to maximum to speed up process of service of the readers. It is also used to control of a library policies. System of library cards issuing allows a fast registration of reader and assign an unique bar-code ID. The computer information system of acquisition of funds provides the readers access to the catalogue of the literature which is planned to be issued by different publishing houses. Electronic forms are available which allow students to make requests of literature. The necessity of the books is determined on the basis of the reader’s electronic application, that doesn’t require physical presence of the readers at the library. Also the system allows analyzing a complete set of educational courses and required literature on the basis of the educational plans of university and information about availability of the literature in funds of the library. Also during of process of fund acquisition the outcomes of a computer statistical analysis of rejected requests on the subscription and reading rooms are taken into account.

Electronic copies production and depositary of electronic teaching materials

By the means of the specialized book scanner the unique rare manuscripts which remain deposited in funds of the library become available in electronic form.  A growing number of full-text electronic copies of the most claimed deficient literature are available for readers in the computer equipped reading rooms of the library.
